the Volturno River. After turning over Sicily and Naples to Victor Emmanuel, he retired to his home on the island of Caprera, where he formulated plans to capture the Papal States. His first expedition to bring this about, in 1862, resulted in his wounding. He mounted another expedition on Rome in 1867, only to be halted by French troops. During the Franco-Prussian War of 1870-71, he led a force of volunteers in support of the new French republic. Garibaldi's popularity, his skill at rousing the masses, and his military exploits are all credited with making the unification of Italy possible. He died at Caprera. people believe exist intentionally in coded form in the text of the Bible. The primary coding method is the Equidistant Letter Sequence (ELS). To extract an ELS from a text, choose a starting point (any letter) and a skip (a number, possibly negative). Then, beginning at the starting point, select letters from the text at equal spacing as given by the skip. For example, the bold letters in this sentence form an ELS for the word SAFEST. (The skip is -4. Spaces and punctuation are ignored.) Often more than one ELS related to some topic can be displayed simultaneously in an ELS letter array. This is produced by writing out the text in a regular grid, with exactly the same number of letters in each line, then cutting out a rectangle.

800 loads of stores and ammunition to Leopoldville on the Stanley Pool. (railroad?) Progress was slow, since the rainy season was was at its height, and food was short - a problem that was to be persistent thoughout the expedition (as a subsistence economy, the area along the route rarely had spare food for 1,000 hardworking men). On 21 April the expedition arrived at Leopoldville. Although King Leopold had promised a flotilla of river steamers, only one (the Stanley) worked; Stanley requisitioned two (Peace and Henry Reed) from missionaries, whose protests were overridden, and the Florida, which was still under construction and so used as a barge. Even these were insufficient, so many of the stores were left at Leopoldville and more at Bolobo. At this point Stanley also announced the
